US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility in Abu Dhabi

The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility at Terminal 3 (T3) in Abu Dhabi Airport is a purpose-built facility that allows US bound passengers to process all immigration, customs and agriculture inspections in Abu Dhabi, before you depart. It is the only CBP facility in the Middle East, and one of only a few outside of North America.

After you have cleared customs and immigrations for the US at Abu Dhabi airport, there is no need for further checks when you arrive in the US. You can even check your baggage through to your final destination in the US.

It’s the fastest way to get through the airport and on to your final destination in the US – your way.

How to clear US immigration at Abu Dhabi airport

If you are travelling to the US under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) you must:

Apply for authorization to travel under the VWP using the US Department of Homeland Security ESTA website, no less than 72 hours before travel. Add API (Advance Passenger Information) to your booking at least one hour before the first flight on your itinerary. Know the restricted and prohibited merchandise you can bring to the US – remember you must not carry any food items, including spices. Hold an individual machine-readable passport and a confirmed return or onward ticket (or e-ticket) for departure from the US within 90 days. Complete relevant CBP Customs information – if required - at Abu Dhabi International Airport on the day of departure.

If you are travelling to the US with a valid visa you must:

Important notes:

Check-in for all flights to the US will close two hours before departure for guests who are starting their journey in Abu Dhabi. All guests must present themselves at the US Customs and Border Protection facility no later than 60 minutes before departure. Failure to do so may result in refusal of travel. Please note that by using the preclearance facility at Abu Dhabi International Airport, your date of entry to the US on your passport will be the date you depart from Abu Dhabi.

Power banks and spare batteries

Loose or spare batteries, power banks, e-cigarettes, e-pipes and other personal vaporisers must be placed into your cabin-baggage or kept in your pocket or purse, individually protected. For safety reasons, these items are strictly not allowed in your checked baggage.

You are allowed to carry a maximum of 10 loose or spare batteries, including power banks.

For your electronic devices or spare batteries, the output of Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries must not exceed 100 Watt-hours; the metal content in Lithium-metal batteries must not exceed 2 grams.

Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs)

You may carry up to 15 electronic devices (including a laptop, tablet, e-reader, mobile phone or medical device) on your flight with us, in both your cabin or checked baggage. Any device in checked baggage must be completely switched off (i.e. not in sleep or hibernation mode) and protected from damage.

US Premium Lounge

If you’re flying on an Etihad-operated flight in First or Business from Abu Dhabi to the US, you can use our US Premium Lounge after clearing US Immigration and Customs. The lounge offers comfortable seating, light refreshments and space to relax whilst you wait for your flight.
